I am a PhD researcher studying the development of perception and production of prosody by Dutch children wearing a cochlear implant (CI). Although CIs restore hearing to a very successful degree, some aspects of the sound are delivered to the brain in a coarse way. The perception of prosody, for instance, is very problematic. Because success in production is thought to be linked with perception, the way in which CIs facilitate the delivery of prosodic parameters has consequences not only for perceptual but also for the productive communicative capabilities of the child. In a broader sense, I am interested in the question what type of and how much information a child needs to develop prosodic skills.
